Just because you are a senior, who is retired from your job and perhaps have less mobility than you’d like, doesn’t mean that the educationally stimulating part of your life is over. Thanks to modern technology, there is a big wide world of learning out there that is available to you. What it means for many seniors is acquiring knowledge of anything that interests them, whether it is technology, art, health, or cooking. As your grandchildren are going off to college to build the skills they need to succeed in the modern world, you too can advance your education to deepen your knowledge.
Learn Technology With Senior Planet
In New York City, seniors have two unique opportunities to take stimulating classes suited to their needs. First, there is the Senior Planet Exploration Center, a technology center located in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood. Sponsored by Older Adults Technology Services, (OATS) Senior Planet has a center that focuses on technology training for New Yorkers aged 60 and up, and it offers an interesting mix of classes, programs, workshops, lectures, and special events of particular interest to seniors. The center publishes a calendar punctuated with lively concerts, trips, theater, and films – a far cry from most senior-oriented event calendars.
The programming can help you learn valuable skills about your mobile devices, iPad basics, the Internet, online shopping, digital photography and photo editing, and more. While some of the classes are held at the Manhattan location, there are classes held at senior centers throughout the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens as well. Many of the classes that take place in any of the sessions are 5 to 10 week programs that meet twice a week, which means you will have plenty of time to absorb the material, interact with teachers and students, and apply what you learned on your own devices.
Learn At Home With DOROT
A second great educational opportunity based in Manhattan’s upper West side is DOROT, an organization committed to alleviating social isolation among the elderly and providing services to help them live independently in the community. The organization, run with volunteers, seniors, and professionals, not only welcomes seniors in search of educational opportunities and other life services, but is interested in senior volunteers as well.
Their University Without Walls program offers educational courses to seniors who are homebound. Using the telephone, participants can listen to and participate in hundreds of classes on all kinds of subjects. The classes are led by professionals and volunteers who are happy to share their knowledge about arts, history, health, current events, books, etc. and interact with students. Anyone in the United States can participate by phone.
DOROT also offers some of its classes and discussion groups in Russian to cater to the many seniors in New York and across the country who speak their native language. This program even offers a citizenship Exam Preparation Course to help Russian speaking seniors prepare to become US citizens.
